Dr. Richard's Thoughts
Hello, everyone! My name is Richard Garnett, and I am currently an Associate Professor of Sociology at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, USA. I teach courses in theory, social inequality, social movements, the Holocaust and genocide, and globalization, among others. My research interests have included such things as war, Holocaust perpetrators, and the culture of cyberspace. My currents research is in the area of racial construction, with a comparative view of Brasil, the United States, and Colombia. My personal interests include reading, photography, and writing poetry. My musical tastes are varied, for classic rock to classical, jazz, Brasilian, reggae, salsa ... anything that sounds good (which does not include rap or twangy country for me). My favorite films are Grand Illusion, Cidade dos Homens, Bridge on the River Kwai, and The Motorcycle Diaries. My reading is also eclectic. Besides what I must read for my classes and research, my favorite authors are Kafka, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Jorge Amado. I know some French and German, and really need to get to work on learning Portugues and Spanish. Please wish me luck!
